On Sunday September 22, Ben, myself and some friends decided to take an overnight trip to the sand dunes. Around 1:30 AM, I was involved in a roll over crash in a sand rail that left me with a fractured clavicle, broken C1 vertebrae, and shattered T4 and T5 vertebrates. When the ambulance finally arrived an hour later, I was taken to the Nephi hospital with my husband Ben beside me. Shortly after arriving at the hospital with Ben, I was taken back to do X-rays and realized that I had no feeling from my chest down. The medical staff decided I needed to be life-flighted to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. Unfortunately, after much begging and pleading, Ben was unable to fly with me to the hospital in Provo. Once I arrived, the doctors began to run IVs, take more X-rays, and to be honest, I'm not quite sure what else happened because I was in and out of consciousness due to shock, but after about two hours Ben had arrived after taking the ambulance from Nephi with the driver of the sand rail.
Next thing I knew, I was sitting in the Neuro Shock Trauma ICU room alone. Freaking out in a panic, about to lose my mind, Ben finally walked in and immediately helped to calm me down and get a hold of myself. He truly made a huge difference that night in being there with me. I don't think I would have made it without him. I was so freaked out at this point, I didn't know what to do or think. All I knew is that the life I once had would never be the same. |
