As Spring begins I can't wait to come out of hibernation and get outside again. I've been thinking a lot about the things I used to do before my injury. Playing softball, going to the dunes, went golfing, riding a motorcycle, girls nights, the "occasional" gambling, etc. It makes me a little sad I gave up on a lot of those things and honestly I don't know why.... Actually, I know exactly why. I didn't want to have to do them differently. I want to do them just the way I used to dammit. But the truth is, that's not going to happen anytime soon. So either I sit around and wait for that day, OR I except it for now and enjoy trying new things. You learn a lot about yourself when you’re forced to look in the mirror. I’ve determined that I’m way stronger, mentally than I thought. With that being said this Spring will be the first time I will go back to the sand dunes since my accident. I’m ready to go. Not sure how I will do but it’s time. There is definitely some uneasiness around the idea, but I think that’s to be expected.
Ben and Madsen are doing well. Madsen makes us laugh everyday. Even though everyday I want to punch him, I still love that little pig. Ben is the same awesome husband he has always been. He puts up with a lot from me and Madsen. Sometimes I wonder why, but regardless I’m pretty lucky.
Back in November, I started looking for work. I had gone to probably 5 interviews and turned down 3 jobs. It just didn’t feel right and I was starting to doubt myself. Then, a guy in my parents’ neighborhood asked how I was doing and my dad mentioned I was kind of looking for a job but the hours I needed where kind of weird and he said they were looking for someone with the same hours basically. I honestly got really lucky, it’s weird how stuff like that happens sometimes. It’s only a couple days a week for a few hours but it’s been great. It’s a receptionist position at the moment but there is a lot of growth opportunity if I want it. It’s been great to get out of the house and do something different. I’ve done receptionist work for years so it’s been like riding a bike, so to speak. They have been so great and have made the changes needed to make things easier for me.
I’ve been able to continue speaking at different schools and I love every minute of it. It’s fun and therapeutic to talk to students about what happened and how it’s changed me. I hope they really take something away from it. Every day is a chance to do something different. I’m not saying everyone will change the world but every day we have the chance to see and/or do something that is new. There’s so many times I think ‘I wish I would have gone for one more run or played catch with the football once more, gone swimming, one more vacation.’ That’s the thing though, you never know. Don’t wait for tomorrow, just live life. That’s all we can do right?
Last thing I want to mention, is somethings coming up with Neuroworx. They are having their annual Legacy River Run on May 21st. 100% of the proceeds go back to Neuroworx. They are a non-profit so please come/donate. They took me in right after leaving the hospital, even though I was uninsured. With donations and grants they have available I was able to get the therapy I needed. They are amazing people over there and do some truly amazing things for people like me. It’s a place I probably would have never known about but I’m really glad I’ve met them and can help give back to a place that did so much for me. Here’s the info for the Legacy River Run. Come and run, it’s an easy 6K. If you’ve never done one, this is a great one to start with. I will be there with a hand cycle so no excuses people!
